James Gosling developed in java platform at Sun Microsystems, It is owned by Oracle, and more than 3 billion devices run Java.  It is a computing platform for application development. 

It runs a variety of platforms, such as windows, Mac OS, and various versions of UNIX. It is a set of computer software and specifications.

It is used for:

Developing Java applications in laptops, data centers, mobile applications (especially Android apps), Desktop applications web applications, web servers,  application servers, Games, Database connections, And much, much more!    Use for Big Data Analytics, Used for Server-Side Technologies like Apache, JBoss, GlassFish, etc.

Java Features:

It is one of the easy-to-use programming languages to learn.

Java is platform-independent. Some programs developed in one machine can be executed in another machine.

It is designed for building object-oriented applications.
